Treatment for High Blood Pressure

In medical terms, high blood pressure is known as hypertension. Blood pressure means the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries. When the pressure is abnormally high, it naturally causes abnormal wear and tear on the blood vessels. In serve cases, the pressure can cause the strained capillaries (tiny blood vessels) to rupture, which may result in a heart attack or stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. The brain is believed to be particularly susceptible to hemorrhage because it is enclosed in the skull and cannot expand when the blood pressure increases.
Kidney disease, particularly inflammation, can cause hypertension, however only a very small percentage of the cases of high blood pressure are accounted for by kidney disease. More common is that type of high blood pressure known as “essential hypertension.” This type is presumed to exit without any well-defined cause being known.
The usual symptoms of high blood pressure are dizziness, headaches and noises or ringing in the ears. Along with any remedy used for hypertension, the following regime is generally recommended: sufficient rest, regular exercise, abstinence from tobacco, coffee, alcoholic beverages, a low sodium diet and when possible the avoidance of stress provoking situations and control of the cholesterol count by proper diet.
Acupuncture has been a proven treatment, backed by numerous studies to lower blood pressure. The source of high blood pressure varies from person to person and is treated as such.

Acupuncture for Pregnancy

“To concieve, the conditions must be just right…not too hot, not too cold, not to still and not to mobile.”

Fertility issues are increasingly more common in the United States. There are several options available for those wanting children with heavy price tags. The prime age to conceive is from 18 to 25 years old. After the age of 25, a women’s fertility begins to decline slowly. At the age of 35, that process declines more rapidly. By the age of 40, a woman’s chance of getting pregnant becomes very problematic with many complications. However, being technical, women can get pregnant as long as they are ovulating and having a menstrual cycle.

Men are different as far as fertility goes. Their fertility is very high until their late 30’s, by their 50’s men begin to see drastic drops in fertility. Even so, two thirds of men will not see a drop in fertility until they are much older than that (look at Larry King).
The perspective from Oriental Medicine on fertility issues extremely differs from Western Medicine. The approach of Western Medicine is to over stimulate hormone production, which in Oriental Medicine’s view, rides a high rate of miscarriage. Even in the approach of in vitro fertilization, a female’s body may not strong enough to support carrying a child which could be a reason the women could not organically conceive.
The view in Oriental Medicine on fertility lies in the same concepts of overall health. Balance. A good barometer to measure in fertility standards is the menstrual cycle. Delayed or heavy cycles make conception prolonged. Short or missing cycles stand the risk of miscarriage. High levels of pain during a menses indicate that energetically something is blocked and not moving properly in the body. That blockage can not only create pain, but obstruct the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and egg production.
Some of the reasons behind the obstruction of the reproductive system can be
· Dietary Factors
· Not at a healthy weight (obesity or anorexia)
· Trauma from previous miscarriages or surgeries
· Beginning the menstrual cycle later (later then age 14)
· Alcohol
· Stressful lifestyle
· Emotional factors (anxiety, fear or sadness)
NUTRITION
Out of anything that you can do to improve your chances of conception, food choices top the list. Our food supplies, manufacturing methods and components of food have drastically changed over the last 20 years. We are faced with genetic modification, gene splicing, pesticides, prepackaged, frozen and poorly cooked meals.
Food can be used medicinally or it can be part of the problem. Heavy foods cause dampness in the body, blocking reproductive organs. Foods that are filled with pesticides and are genetically altered lower the immune system.
Some healthy food tips:
· Eat organic as much as possible
· Eliminate dairy, red meat and soy
· Don’t buy anything that comes in a box, tub, can or plastic container
· Avoid using the microwave as a method of cooking
One if the essential in conception is avoiding alcohol. Alcohol affects every tissue in the body and disrupts the flow of blood, energy and movement in the body by “knotting” or “binding” up qi. This prevents a smooth transfer during conception. Additionally, alcohol raises the core basal body temperature, making conditions excessively hot throughout the body. It takes approximately 3 days to re-regulate the internal temperature of the body. For somebody that has a few drinks per week, the effects can be endless.
The procedure of trying to conceive does not have to be complicated or expensive. Making healthy food choices and acupuncture are powerful weapons. Oriental medicine is more balanced then other methods, without erratic side effects, invasive procedures or over stimulating hormonal balance and wiping out the adrenal functions. The approach of Chinese medicine in conception is simply balance.

Preventign Seasonal Illness With Acupuncture

Autumn is a time of change. It is the time of year when nature prepares to “let go”. The leaves fall from the tress, temperatures dip and the sun fades quicker as days seem longer. Long ago, people lived their lives according to the seasons. The summer season was a time of work, while winters were spent as a time of rest. Villagers would spend the spring time planting crops and the fall was time to harvest and focus on stillness.
These days, through the advance of technology, we are still able to plow away at work in the winter season. Part of the reason most people are sick in the winter time is because biologically, our bodies are wired to slow down at this time of year. When we don’t slow our pace and stress piles up (i.e. the holidays), our immune systems cannot keep up and we fall ill.
Most healthy people get one cold a year. Partially due to temperature variations and our bodies not being able to regulate our internal thermometers quickly enough. Some ways to help your body not get ill is to allow yourself to be exposed to the elements. Keep yourself warm and shut off the air conditioning and heat in your home and in your car. When you are cool or warm and step outside into the changing temperatures the body goes into a state of shock. Like diving into ice cold water, your body goes through chills and the blood in our veins constricts and does not flow as freely.
Another preventative effort to outwit cold and flu season is to change your diet. Summer months and places where it is hot and dry should include a diet of fresh, raw foods. Things like salads, nuts and berries help keep the internal body temperature cool. Although many people get “colds” in the summer months, this can be attributed to too much heat in the system. In order for the body to dispel heat, the pores open up and if you are in air conditioning, too much cold gets in (thus chills).
In the fall/winter season, a diet of warm foods is best. Things that are baked, soups and hot meals (avoiding red meat and salads which slow digestion and are cold in nature) work well. Avoiding over eating heavy foods (like dairy, red meat and soy) help the bodies constantly maintain the flow of energy through your body. Don’t be fooled if the sun is out during the winter months, the wind is more active and leaves the body cold.
Prevention is the best plan for anyone who wants to feel great all season long. Acupuncture helps the body stay in balance and is able to kick out a cold in the beginning stages. Even after a full blown cold has set in, acupuncture speeds up recovery time and assists the body in its natural defenses. The best time for a visit to your acupuncturist is when you feel like you are about to get sick.
It is unfortunate that most of American society is out of touch with nature. We no longer depend on our own crops to eat, nor do we follow the rules of the seasons in our lifestyles. But understanding why our bodies shift so drastically helps us understand steps to take when we begin to feel “under the weather”.

Taking Your Health Personally

Why is it that the American society puts more thought behind buying a house or a car then what they put in their body and the level of care their physicians provide?

I watch HGTV and an overweight couple searching for a new home. They have a wish list two pages long and joyfully profess about how quot;particular” they are. They complain about the paint color the master bedroom is as they huff and puff over the small flight of stairs they just climbed. I wonder if they know that paint color can be changed in a few hours, but that extra 75 pounds of body weight will take awhile to work off.

Our couple is very particular about the layout of the home wanting a lot of space- 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (there is just the two of them), an open floor plan, granite counter tops, hardwood floors and of course the husband needs a “man cave”. After all, it is THEIR money. And the consequences to not choosing the perfect home could haunt them for years to come as they wake up every morning with laminate countertops glaring at them while preparing cereal. They decide against the beautiful two story house, because of the stair situation, obviously, the stairs are a problem. At the beginning of the show, they tell the audience that they are both in their early 30’s. What a bummer.

For early adulthood, they are walking around in a body that parallels someone in their 60’s. But, luckily for the young couple, if physical limitations hold them back from purchasing their dream house, they can just find another one minus the stairs. Society makes it convenient to be obese. After all, statistics state that our generation will be sicker and die earlier then our parent’s generation. This is the first time this has happened in the history of our species that we don’t evolve forward with healthcare.

Is it more acceptable that we have the majority of Americans in the same boat? There will be a whole lot of new marketing ideas around the concept that our generation is less healthy than the previous. I have treated many patients in my short career thus far, and there is a common theme that seems to ring true with every patient I see, they come to see me as a last resort. What if preventative medicine was a priority and they visited me first? Would our picky couple still be compromising their dream home over a set of stairs?

Now we can get into how “the system” in this country is poorly run, how physicians don’t spend more than 7 minutes with a patient, how insurance companies push prescription medications and we’re all walking around over medicated. The hoops you have to jump through to get a referral from your primary physician for the specialist you really need to see. How after you get your referral, your appointment is 2 months away because they are booked solid. We could even discuss how the quality of food has diminished in the United States, everything in the grocery store is genetically modified without labels, our meats and dairy products are full of anti-biotics and hormones. We can discuss these things in depth and shift blame to “everybody else” as to why we are not a healthier nation.

But the truth of the matter is your health care, emotions and personal happiness has nothing to do with the dysfunction of society and EVERYTHING to do with you. If you feel that your needs are not being met, then meet them. Even with all the politics of our modern health care system, one fact still remains and that is choice. We choose not to help ourselves. We choose not to be seen and heard. We choose to put health care on the back burner until something critical happens. It all begins with you and your choice. Personal responsibility is the most beneficial thing a person can do in their life.

Choosing to exercise, get adequate sleep, and make good dietary decisions will keep your body functioning properly and keep you out of the “majority bracket”. This pattern is what keeps Western medicine functioning and in part, why health care coverage is so high. Until people become active and not reactive in their own health care, the system of Western medicine will continue. It is the public that funds the behavior of insurance and health care practices in this country. We have accepted that this is how things are and play the game, becoming frustrated when we do not get positive results.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, knows your body better then you do. Despite the title of the person you are being treated by, their experience or education. If you are not being heard by your doctor, find one that does. There are options here, and it is our system to believe that Western medicine and not being treated with respect is acceptable. Remember, you get what you settle for- the house, that car and your health care.
